Chapter meetings are held at Portneuf District Library, 5210 Stuart Avenue, Chubbuck, Idaho, on the third Wednesday of each month from 5:30 until 8 p.m. September through May and 4:30 until 6 p.m. during the summer. We conduct thoughtful, in-depth critiques, brainstorm ideas, sponsor contests and workshops, help with works in progress and polishing for publication, publicize members' work, instruct in writing techniques and honing the craft, and from time to time conduct a separate novelist critique group.
Other advantages include book signings, guest speakers, recommended reading, networking with other IWL chapters, participation in state contests, and support for youth writing. We have provided an on-line version of Writer’s Digest for the use of patrons of Portneuf District Library and will continue the service if writers take advantage of it. Currently, Pocatello Chapter has a softbound anthology of chapter members' writing, Pearls, available for purchase.
No one has to be a lonely writer. Regardless of genre or whether you write novels, short fiction, poetry, essays, family chronicles, or autobiography, or do non-fiction freelancing, any serious writer can benefit from a support group of like-minded writers. Meetings provide encouragement, understanding, and information as well as specific comments and suggestions to improve a manuscript. We share information about publishers, agents, contests, and other outlets for writers. Social contact with other writers helps each of us when we attend meetings. We hold two socials annually, an August picnic and a Christmas party attended by members and their families. Besides the fun of the social gathering, we share writings just for pleasure at these events.
The only criteria for membership is a burning need to get your ideas down on paper and a serious intent to write well. Publication is important to our members. We work for it. We might make the difference for you.
